Overnight Swap Fees in Forex: How Rollover Charges Affect Trades

DAK MARKETS · FOREX TRADING EDUCATION

Have you ever held a forex or CFD position overnight and noticed a charge—or even a credit—appear on your trading account? The movement of the market may explain part of your account's profit or loss, but an additional adjustment can also occur when a position remains open past the daily rollover.

That adjustment is commonly called an overnight swap fee, a rollover charge, or overnight financing. Understanding it matters because the total cost of a trade is not limited to the spread and commission. The length of time you keep a position open can affect its overall outcome.

In this DAK Markets guide, we explain what overnight swap fees are, how long and short positions can have different rates, why multi-day adjustments occur, and what to check before holding a trade overnight.

What Are Overnight Swap Fees in Forex Trading?

An overnight swap is a financing adjustment that may be charged or credited when a leveraged position remains open through an instrument's rollover time. For spot-forex-style products, the underlying mechanics are related to the interest-rate conditions of the two currencies and the broker's pricing. For other CFDs, the financing methodology may be different.

A swap is separate from the spread, which is the difference between the quoted buy and sell prices, and separate from any trading commission. A position may be profitable based on price movement yet have part of that profit reduced by financing charges.

Important distinction

Overnight does not always mean midnight on your clock. The relevant event is the instrument's specified daily rollover cut-off. A trade held across that cut-off may receive an adjustment even if the holding period is relatively short.

Whether you pay, receive a credit, or see no adjustment depends on the instrument, trade direction, account conditions and applicable swap schedule. Swap rates can change, so examples should never be treated as live broker quotes.

When Does an Overnight Swap Apply?

Most trading platforms define a rollover moment for each applicable instrument. A position that is closed before that cut-off will generally avoid that day's overnight adjustment; a position that remains open beyond it may be charged or credited.

Conceptual timeline; exact cut-off time, time zone and applicable instruments must be checked in the platform's specifications.

If you open and close a position within the same trading day without crossing rollover, there will usually be no overnight swap for that day. But spreads, commissions and other applicable costs may still apply.

Why Do Leveraged Forex and CFD Positions Carry Financing?

A leveraged product allows a trader to obtain market exposure larger than the cash committed as margin. As an illustration, a $1,000 margin commitment might support $10,000 of exposure, depending on the instrument and required margin. That exposure is not the same as owning the full underlying position outright.

For a leveraged forex or CFD position, a broker's overnight financing adjustment may reflect interest rates, funding costs, instrument-specific conventions and the broker's pricing. It should not be assumed that a swap is calculated only from the trader's deposited cash or that every CFD uses the same formula.

Margin and swap are different concepts: margin determines the collateral required to maintain a position, while swap relates to the cost or credit of keeping the exposure open over a rollover period.

Why Long and Short Positions Have Different Swap Rates

A trader buying an instrument and a trader selling it may face different overnight swap rates. Platforms commonly show separate values for the long (buy) and short (sell) directions.

It is possible for one direction to carry a debit while the other carries a credit. It is also possible for both directions to have negative swaps. The result varies with the instrument, prevailing market rates and the broker's applied terms.

Example A · Financing debit

An overnight charge reduces the trade's net outcome.

Example B · Potential credit
+$2.10

Under qualifying conditions a positive swap may be credited.

These illustrations do not show a buy and sell swap for any particular live instrument. Rates may be expressed in points or other platform units, rather than direct account-currency amounts.

A positive swap does not make a position risk-free. Price movement can produce a loss much larger than any financing credit, and the applicable rate can change while the trade is open.

How to Calculate Overnight Swap Fees

The precise swap calculation depends on how the trading platform quotes the rate. Some platforms show a cash amount per standard contract or lot; others display points or a financing percentage that must be converted using contract size, position volume, price and currency conversion rules.

If the applicable swap has already been expressed as a cash amount per lot per rollover, a useful simplified estimate is:

Simplified swap calculation
Estimated Swap = Cash Rate per Lot × Lots × Rollover Multiplier
Use only when the displayed rate is already in a cash-per-lot unit. Other rate formats require conversion.

Example: Holding a Position for Three Ordinary Rollovers

Imagine a hypothetical position incurs a $5 financing charge at each of three ordinary rollover events. If the rate remains unchanged and no multi-day adjustment applies, the total estimated charge would be $15.

−$5
Night 2
−$5
Night 3

This is a fixed-rate teaching example. Real swaps, conversion rates and multi-day rollover multipliers may differ.

The calculation matters most when the anticipated price movement is relatively small or the holding period is long. An otherwise profitable trade can have a lower net result after financing costs.

What the example does not include

Spread, trading commissions, currency conversion, variable rates, any triple-swap event, price slippage or the profit and loss generated by the underlying instrument.

Why Are Some Overnight Swaps Charged for Multiple Days?

Markets and settlement systems do not all operate on identical calendars. As a result, certain instruments may apply a multi-day rollover adjustment at a scheduled point during the week to account for days when ordinary settlement or financing processes are not carried out.

For many spot-forex-style products, a triple rollover is commonly associated with a midweek settlement convention. But traders should not assume Wednesday applies to every instrument. The actual day, multiplier and schedule can differ for forex pairs, indices, commodities, metals and other CFDs.

Rate changeFinancing amount can increase, decrease or change signLatest instrument specifications
Position closed before cut-offUsually no adjustment for that rolloverWhether the position was open at the applicable cut-off

Consequently, an overnight position does not always incur the same cash adjustment on every calendar day. This is particularly important for traders who carry positions toward the end of the week.

How Overnight Financing Affects Day Traders and Swing Traders

The relevance of swap fees depends partly on a trader's holding period and strategy. A trader who normally closes positions before rollover may experience little direct overnight financing. By contrast, a swing trader holding positions for several days or weeks should include financing when assessing the trade's expected net outcome.

Intraday approach
Before cut-off

Typically avoids overnight swap for that rollover, though the spread and any commission remain relevant.

Swing approach
Several rollovers

Financing may accumulate and should be included in the intended holding-period cost.

This does not mean that intraday trading is automatically less expensive or preferable. Frequent trading may generate repeated spread and commission costs, whereas longer-duration trades may have different risks and financing expenses. The comparison depends on the complete strategy.

A practical way to evaluate the net outcome is to examine price profit or loss, spread, commission, overnight financing and currency conversion together rather than analyzing each item in isolation.

Four Things to Check Before Holding a Forex Trade Overnight

01 / RATE

Check the current swap rate

Review the instrument's long and short financing values and understand the units in which the platform displays them.

02 / SIZE

Confirm your position volume

Estimate financing against the actual lot or contract size, not merely the cash margin placed on the trade.

03 / TIMING

Find the rollover cut-off

Check the relevant time zone and whether a multi-day multiplier is scheduled during the intended holding period.

04 / OVERALL PLAN

Include it in the trade assessment

Consider financing alongside spreads, commissions, potential price moves, stop-loss placement, and the planned holding period.

05 / REVIEW

Recheck while the trade is open

Swap rates and conditions can change. Use your platform's current instrument details rather than an old screenshot or a past estimate.

DAK Markets traders should consult the current symbol or instrument specifications available in their trading platform and the applicable account terms. If a cost is unclear, verify the exact contract and account details before deciding whether to hold the position across rollover.

Frequently Asked Questions About Overnight Swap Fees

Is an overnight swap always a fee?

No. Depending on the instrument, direction and applied rates, a swap can be a debit or a credit. Both sides of an instrument may also carry negative rates.

Do I pay swap fees if I close a forex trade the same day?

Usually not if you close before the instrument's relevant rollover cut-off. Opening and closing on the same calendar date is not enough by itself: the rollover schedule is what matters.

Are overnight swap rates fixed?

No. Financing rates and the resulting cash amounts can change with market conditions, broker pricing, the position size, and any applicable conversion. Always consult current specifications.

Why is there sometimes a triple swap?

Multi-day adjustments account for settlement and financing conventions across non-business days. Many spot-forex-style products apply one midweek, but the exact schedule varies by instrument and broker.

Can swap fees affect a profitable trade?

Yes. A position's net outcome includes price movement and applicable trading costs. Accumulated financing debits can reduce profits or increase losses; credits can help but do not eliminate market risk.

Final Thoughts: Plan for the Full Cost of the Trade

Overnight swap fees in forex trading are easy to overlook because they may be much smaller than the position's day-to-day market movement. Yet holding a position through repeated rollovers can make those adjustments meaningful.

The key is to understand the current financing terms before leaving a position open. Check the instrument, whether you are buying or selling, the size of your position, the applicable cut-off, and whether a multi-day swap may occur.

DAK Markets perspective: A trading plan should account for the full cost of execution and holding exposure—not only whether the market reaches the intended take-profit or stop-loss. Spread + Commission + Financing can all affect the eventual result.
